A common local scene you may notice: Don’t be surprised if, from time to time, police officers come by to clear tables and chairs that extend onto the road. The stall owners are very quick — they will politely ask you to pause for a moment, swiftly move the tables and chairs inside, and then bring everything back out again once the officers have passed. This is a normal part of street life in Hanoi and usually only takes a few minutes. Most visitors find it quite amusing and it becomes part of the authentic atmosphere.
