G’day mates,
If someone asks me “What’s the one place in Vietnam you could visit over and over again?”, my answer is always the same — Hoi An Ancient Town.
There’s something about this little riverside town that just hits different. The golden-yellow walls, the colourful lanterns swaying in the breeze, the gentle Thu Bon River… it feels like you’ve stepped into a postcard. I still remember the first time I walked through the Old Town at night — it honestly took my breath away.
Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s most charming and well-preserved ancient towns, known for its lantern-lit streets, riverside scenery, and rich cultural heritage.
For Australian travellers, Hoi An is often a highlight of Central Vietnam itineraries, offering a peaceful contrast to larger cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
The town combines history, culture, food, and local experiences in a compact and walkable destination, making it one of the most popular stops in Vietnam travel routes.
For travellers joining our Vietnam Tour Packages or Authentic Vietnam Tour, Hội An is more than just a stop — it’s an unforgettable experience of culture, cuisine, and craftsmanship.

Why Aussies Love Hoi An So Much
Hoi An is the perfect mix of history, food, shopping and relaxation. It’s not too big, not too hectic, and incredibly walkable (or easy to cycle around). After the buzz of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, arriving in Hoi An feels like a big sigh of relief.
It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved ancient trading ports in Southeast Asia. You can feel the layers of history from the Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and European influences everywhere you look.
What You Shouldn’t Miss in Hoi An Ancient Town
Lantern-lit Old Town at night – Pure magic. Every full moon they have the Lantern Festival and it’s something else.
Japanese Covered Bridge – Iconic and beautiful, especially at sunset.
Ancient Merchant Houses – Step inside and you’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time.
Thu Bon River – Take a basket boat ride or enjoy a riverside dinner.
Tailor shops – Get a custom suit or dress made in 24 hours. Dangerous for your wallet but brilliant quality!
My honest tip: Stay until at least 9pm. That’s when the town really comes alive with lanterns reflecting on the river.

The Food Scene – Cao Lau & Banh Mi Heaven
You can’t talk about Hoi An without talking about the food. This town has some of the most unique dishes in Vietnam:
Cao Lầu – Thick noodles only found in Hoi An, with crispy pork crackling and fresh herbs.
Bánh Mì Phượng – Anthony Bourdain called it one of the best sandwiches in the world. He wasn’t wrong.
White Rose Dumplings – Delicate, pretty, and delicious.
We always tell our travellers: “Come hungry.”
Perfect for Australian Travellers
Many of our customers from Australia love combining Hoi An with:
Da Nang beaches and Bana Hill (just 30–40 minutes away)
